Personal Selected Works

Personal Selected works (scale Models)

All of these scale models have been built by hand from scratch. These photographs were taken outside to get the most authentic and realistic lighting.

mid century modern pool (3/8” scale)

I created a miniature, 3/8” scale model of a Sketchup model that I designed. This is my most extensive scale model creation to date. The main platform is mainly lasercut 1/4” thick MDF and 1/8” thick plywood that has been hand painted to the desired finish. All the stonework on the walls and pillars was sculpted and painted by hand, and the pool is made of a sheet of acrylic that I tinted blue with Duplicolor’s blue, Metalcast, translucent laquer. The foliage was made using sea moss, and several colors of Noch Leaves. The beach was created with a foam base, and real sand. Waves were created with Liquatex Gloss Gel on top of a blue basecoat. The mountains are a printed backdrop mounted to a 2’x5’ foam board.

Broughton street (1/4” scale)

The objective of this project was to choose a block of Broughton Street in Savannah, Georgia, and to re-imagine the way it looked in the fifties through a scale model. The first step was measuring each facade on Broughton Street with my fellow colleagues. From there, I drew up each building in 1/4” scale in Adobe Illustrator, and had them laser cut out of 1/8” thick plywood for the general shapes, and .05” chipboard for the details. The pieces were then glued together, and then painted using a series of spray cans and other hand brushed methods.

watermill (1/35 scale)

This watermill project has to be a personal favorite of mine. I built this during the summer, just after my senior year of high school. It has an extruded polystyrene base, with a cobblestone road that is carved directly into the foam. The house was constructed entirely out of foam core and wooden sticks that were painted blue. The texture applied was made by stippling all purpose joint compound onto the foam core. Each brick on the red wall was hand carved and individually painted. I used real dirt for the base of the scenery, layered with shredded moss, foam filler, and static grass. HO Scale flowers were also added. The tree was made out of Sagebrush, which my friend, Austin, plucked for me while in Eastern Washington. The leaves were made from fake leaf flock, along with various herbs. The water was made from clear silicone sealant. Measurements are 24" W x 24" L x 22" H.

urban Expression

This project was made during my senior year of high school, and I was inspired by all of the graffiti that I saw as I drove by Seattle on I-5. I decided to choose words that meant something to me at the time, and I tried to practice different lettering styles, designs and techniques to get a variety of graffiti. The wall and base were both made from extruded polystyrene. The wooden railroad ties were measured and cut from balsa, and the rails were taken from a piece of spare track and weathered by hand. The rocks were weathered with a dilution of water and black and brown acrylics. The grass was made from brush bristles and green paint. Dimensions are 14-1/2" W x 15-1/2" L x 10" H.

Broken   (1/35 Scale)

This was a project that I made 100 percent from scratch during Spring quarter of 2017 for my 3D design course. The objectives of the assignment were to build an art piece that has line, mass, volume, and plane. I decided to build a bombed out structure from the Second World War. The model itself was built in 1/35 scale with a polystyrene base. Each cobblestone and brick was carved individually by hand. The walls of the building were constructed from two layers of foam core that were stippled with plaster for texture. The plaster was finished with a series of dark acrylic washes. Also, the wooden façade was constructed with varying pieces of balsa wood. The construction of the rubble started with a foundation of joint compound that was layered with hand-cut foam bricks, pebbles, wooden sticks, and spare pieces of foam core. The cabinets and dressers were made from a combination of cereal box cardboard and basswood. The handles are golden miniature, gold beads.

rapunzel's tower   (1/35 Scale)

This scale model was my part in a collaboration project for Rapunzel in my Intro to Entertainment Arts class. As a group, we broke down the script of Rapunzel, and we were each assigned a task for design. I was in charge of the scenic model, while my other members worked on costume renders and storyboards. I decided a daring white tower with stained glass windows, surrounded by nature would fit the scene nicely. The base was made from extruded polystyrene, and it was covered in dirt, static grass, scale flowers, and scratch-made trees and bushes. The tower itself was made from cylindrical expanded polystyrene. The roof was sanded to shape, and covered in individual shingles made from cereal box cardboard. Dimensions are 15"L x 15"W x 18"H.

Over the edge

This was a project that I made during my senior year of high school, and I was quite pleased with the result for how little time it took to construct. Both the base and the cliff were built from extruded polystyrene. The rock texture was made from making several vertical and horizontal cuts. Then I'd tear the foam up by dragging the blade over the surface horizontally. I painted the cliff with several layers of acrylic washes, and I followed up with dry brushing the highlights. The water is made from clear silicone sealant. Measurements are 7" W x 11-1/2" L  9" H.
